I've traveled to Big Bend National Park about a dozen times over the last 35 years and for the first time decided to stay at the Gage Hotel in Marathon with my two teenage kids. It was a memorable experience. After 4 days of hiking, its nice to relax and take a day in comfort.
The Gage owns not just the hotel but the garden two blocks away and the two restaurants next door. The steaks at the 12 Gage were excellent. Good food and good rooms. Staff at the hotel and restaurant were what you would expect at a more luxury hotel. Hospitality is part of the package.
As we were exploring Marathon, member of the maintenance staff who was kind and allowed us to look around pointed us to Post Park and how he would take his kids there. We went and what a pleasant surprise
My wife and I and our 3-month old baby boy stayed at The Gage Hotel in October 1990.... at the time the accommodation was "authentic" - a real carryover from old-time Texas. Our visit to Marathon was serendipitous, unexpected, and very enjoyable. It happened to be one of the most memorable hotel stays of our lives. One day we hope to make a return trip. Gage Hotel is a wonderful experience. A bit old fashioned but that spotlights the history of the hotel.
Friendly staff that are there to make your stay a wonderful place.
Housekeeping was great.
Hotel has many areas in the hotel, outside on the grounds, the fire pit or pool to relax and enjoy your stay.
Restaurants and coffee shops nearby.
We stay each time we go to Big Bend. It's peaceful, great staff, they loaned us an oscillating fan and the nice thing is no TV in the rooms. This makes you actually talk to people. Even the people staying there are friendly and conversational. The hotel has a Texas flair to it. If you eat at thier restaurant get the Buffalo burger or sliders as they are really good. Say hello to thier kitty Squeaks. Great cat. Very friendly. We will come back again when we go to Big Bend again. The nacho plate is huge. Feeds 4 people easily. The night sky is great in Marathon if you are not in the park.
We planned our small (85 person) West Texas wedding from afar at the Gage. Michelle and Meagan worked with us from the jump to book fabulous videographers (31 Films), photographers (The Nichols), and the best wedding band anyone had ever seen or heard (The Mott’s). The venue appealed to us both for sentimental reasons but also because it was a one stop shop. Michelle and her team took care of every detail for us from linens to flowers to food and cake. It made wedding planning for two busy professionals a breeze. The flowers were stunning, the food was delicious, and the staff were incredibly accommodating. All of our guests stayed on site and loved the accommodations - the rooms are comfortable and well appointed. All of our guests remarked at how seamlessly the day ran. If you are considering getting married anywhere near Big Bend, I can’t recommend the team at the Gage enough.
Take the quiz to get your readiness score, a checklist to fill in the gaps, and the insider guide to finding the venue that makes your day unforgettable!
